Agama shastra proportions: what every sanctum idol must get right

Every deity idol destined for a temple sanctum has to answer to a stricter authority than aesthetics: agama shastra, the canonical texts that fix proportion, posture, mudra and ornamentation for each deity. A Ganesha or Shiva that looks beautiful but drifts from tala measurements — the head-to-body ratio system these texts define — simply isn't eligible for consecration in most traditions.
Tala measurement, not eyeballing
Most sanctum idols are built to the nava-tala (nine head-length) system, though some regional traditions use dasha-tala or sapta-tala scales depending on the deity and posture — standing (sthanaka), seated (asana) or reclining (shayana). Every major limb, from shoulder width to the distance between eyes, is measured against the head unit before a single cut is made.
Where digital sculpting actually helps
This is one place modern tooling earns its keep. Building the maquette digitally lets us lock a tala grid to the model and check every joint against it in real time, instead of re-measuring physical clay after each pass. It doesn't replace the shastra — it just removes the guesswork in hitting it consistently across a piece that might be printed or cast in a dozen sections.
Priest and committee review
Before anything moves to casting or 3D printing, we walk the digital or clay maquette through with the commissioning priest or temple committee. Mudra placement, the tilt of the head, and ornament detail (kirita, yajnopavita, ayudhas) get signed off at this stage — it's far cheaper to correct a digital file than a half-finished bronze pour.
None of this is bureaucracy for its own sake. A sanctum idol is going to be worshipped for generations; getting the proportion system right is what lets it be received as a proper murti rather than just a statue that happens to depict a deity.
