When to hand-carve vs 3D print a temple bracket

We get asked often whether large-format 3D printing has made hand wood carving redundant in our studio. It hasn't — the two solve different problems, and most temple woodwork projects end up using both in sequence rather than choosing one over the other.

Where printing wins

For a load-bearing bracket or repeated yali motif that needs to match a fixed architectural drawing exactly, digital sculpting followed by CNC roughing gets the bulk geometry right fast and consistently across multiple identical pieces — useful when a mandapam needs a dozen matching brackets, not one.

Where hand carving wins

The undercuts, the texture that catches light differently depending on the hour, the slightly irregular tool marks that read as 'alive' rather than machined — that's still entirely a hand-finishing job. No CNC head we've used gets the final 10% of a yali's mane or a gaja-simha's expression right without a carver finishing it by chisel.

Our actual workflow

In practice: CNC or printing rough out the structural form and repeat elements to save weeks of labour, then master carvers spend the remaining time on undercuts, motif refinement and a hand-applied wood-tone finish that a rough machined surface can't take convincingly.

The honest answer to 'which is better' is that hand carving alone is the right call for a one-off heritage restoration, and a hybrid pipeline is the right call for anything with repeat elements or a tight installation date — which describes most temple renovation projects we see.
